[ARCHIVED] Plant a pinwheel garden to help bring attention to problem of child abuse

pinwheel

April4, 2018 - April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Healthy Families Partnership, Inc.  is working with other local organizations, schools and churches to draw attention  to the problem.

During the last reporting year, Virginia Child Protective Services reported more than 121 founded cases of child abuse in Hampton and 9,578 founded cases of child abuse statewide.

Healthy Families is looking for partners across the city who are willing to provide a space visible to passersby where a pinwheel "garden" can be planted. The goal is to have blue "pinwheels for prevention" spinning across the city throughout the month.

Contact Alma Dietz, idietz@hampton.k12.va.us or Allison Nelson, anelson@hampton.gov to request a pinwheel garden starter kit or to find out about purchasing additional pinwheels.

Healthy Families will plant a pinwheel garden at the city's Human Services offices, 1320 LaSalle Ave, Thursday at 9 a.m.; at Carousel Park Thursday at 10 a.m. and also at the Healthy  Families offices, 100 Old Hampton Lane, at 9 a.m. Thursday. Call 727-1300 for more information.

On Friday, April 6, residents are encouraged to wear blue for the day to raise awareness of child abuse and the need for prevention. Send a picture of your family, co-workers, congregation or friends wearing blue to @ idietz@hampton.k12.va.us
