Feb. 19, 2018 - Hampton Police said Monday that social media threats pertaining to Bethel and  Kecoughtan high schools have been investigated and there is no information available to substantiate the threats as credible.

Police said all school related activities will continue as scheduled for both schools. "As a precaution there will continue to be an increased officer presence at both schools throughout the day."

Police also noted that Hampton City schools has a "Safe School Hotline" that will receive calls 24 hours a day from students, parents or concerned citizens. The number is 757-727-2255.

Over the weekend, police were alerted to a possible threat that would take place Monday at Bethel High School. A similar threat was made Monday morning regarding Kecoughtan.

"With the speed of social media, rumors and inaccurate information can spread very quickly," police said. "While social media can also be very helpful at times, this appears to be two incidents where it was not."

Parents are encouraged to talk with their children regarding the proper use of social media, and to monitor their children's social media use. Police also remind citizens that  "If you see something, say something."
