Most city offices will be closed Friday as Public Works continues clearing roads

Jan. 4, 2018 – Hampton City Manager Mary Bunting said Thursday evening that city offices will be closed Friday, as Public Works and other city employees continue clearing streets of heavy snow that began falling late Wednesday. Hampton City Schools have already announced that schools will be closed Friday and all related services will be canceled for the weekend.

"I am pleased to report that much progress has been made today on our primary roads, despite the snow and wind conditions lasting much longer in the day that originally expected. That said, the extreme temperatures expected tonight and through the weekend will make for continued hazardous conditions. Please note that temperatures are expected to be in the single digits with wind chills below zero.

"Residential side streets also remain unplowed throughout the region. Based on these conditions, and with a concern toward public and employee safety, we have decided to once again close city operations tomorrow, Friday January 5th," Bunting said.

Also Thursday, officials announced that trash pickup will be delayed until road conditions improve. And Hampton Roads Transit announced Thursday that there will be no transit service on Friday.

Hampton's Public Works crews are continuing their around-the-clock efforts to clear city streets, focusing on high-traffic roads. By Thursday afternoon, Public Works had already used more than 200 tons of salt and about 3,600 gallons of brine. Approximately 200 Public Works, Parks and Hampton Police personnel had been activated, and approximately 740 lane miles of roads and street had been brined. Approximately 1200 lane miles have been salted and plowed.

Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

"Please take care and keep our emergency essential personnel in your thoughts as they continue to brave the elements on our collective behalf," Bunting said.
