Snow predictions increase; libraries & parks to close at 5 p.m. Wednesday

Jan. 3, 2018 - Hampton's snowfall total could hit 8 inches, the National Weather Service said overnight, with snow beginning between 4-6 p.m. Wednesday and falling steadily by 7 p.m.

Hampton City Manager Mary Bunting said Wednesday morning that public libraries, parks and community centers would close early, at 5 p.m., to allow employees and residents to get home before road conditions worsen.

Hampton City Schools' after-school activities Wednesday are canceled because of the weather, and the after-school care programs run by the city at the schools are also canceled.

The National Weather Service upgraded the winter storm watch to a warning and cautioned that temperatures would likely remain at or below freezing for the next several days. Gusty winds Thursday may cause blowing snow and reduce visibility in some areas, and wind chill will make temperatures feel even colder. Overnight temperatures will be in the teens.

Hampton's Pubic Works Department began pretreating major roads with brine Tuesday morning and is continuing pretreatment Wednesday.  Because brine and salt are less effective on ice or snow when temperatures are too low, Public Works may delay using plows until they can be more effective at clearing the roads, and may leave a coating of snow so "black ice" doesn't develop. The city will clear main roads as soon as it is practical (see removal routes at  http://hampton.gov/documentcenter/view/4051).

Public Works employees are expected to begin 12-hour shifts at 6 a.m. Wednesday and will continue working 12 hour shifts through the snowfall.
