Jan. 2, 2018 - Effective Jan. 1, former Mayor Molly Ward returned to serve Hampton as the new city treasurer. Ward ran unopposed this fall to fill the term of former treasurer Robert Williams. The fall election also saw Anton Bell re-elected as commonwealth's attorney, Ross Mugler re-elected as revenue commissioner, and B.J. Roberts re-elected as sheriff. Bell has been the city prosecutor for five years, Mugler has been commissioner for more than 25 years, and Roberts has been sheriff for nearly 25 years.
Ward previously served as treasurer from 2002-2008, and was mayor from 2008 until October of 2013, when she resigned to become a special assistant to the president and deputy director for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House. Ward left the White House to serve as Virginia's secretary of Natural Resources.
