Homelessness consortium plans vigil to remember those who died in the past year

newhomeless

Dec. 14, 2017 - Members and supporters of the Greater Virginia Peninsula Homelessness Consortium, including service providers, religious leaders and others, will gather at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, at Langley Christian Church, 175 Fox Hill Road, to remember those who have lost their lives as a result of being homeless on the Peninsula in the past year.

Homeless Person's Memorial Day is commemorated annually in more than 150 cities and counties nationwide on the first day of winter. There will also be a call to end homelessness in all cities nationwide.

Building on the theme of “Remember, Hope, and Heal” the first annual Homeless Memorial Day Vigil will feature a ceremonial reading of the names of homeless and formerly homeless who died in the past year. This event is open to the public.

The consortium is a regional body comprised of six separate political jurisdictions - Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County, and York County - working to prevent homeless on the  Peninsula. For more information, contact Darryle Brown of the Consortium at 757-722-2261.
