Community meeting planned to discuss where recreational vehicles can be parked


Nov. 7, 2017 - Today’s recreational vehicles differ from the past and pose storage challenges for RV owners - and their neighbors. Where can they be parked on private property? Can they block sight lines? Hampton is updating regulations and wants input. 

Join Community Development staff Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Convention Center for a discussion. There will be a brief presentation,  a chance to discuss what defines an RV, what should be regulated, and how much the new ordinance should reflect the surrounding locality. The meeting is open to the public.

City Council has discussed the issues on Feb. 8 and May 10. The current regulations allow recreational vehicles on residential lots only when:

  • No greater than 28’ long, 8’ wide, and 10’ tall
  • Meets accessory structure setbacks 
  • Not parked in a front yard, except when loading or unloading (max 48 hours)

However, those regulations have provided challenges for enforcement, as RVs have grown in size. Also, inspectors can't go on private property to measure height and length.
