May 10, 2017 - Hampton Roads, including the City of Hampton, has been designated one of eight "Great American Defense Communities" by the Association of Defense Communities for providing unwavering support to service members and military families.
One of the programs highlighted by the ADC is Hampton’s "Adopt an Airman" program, which encourages local residents to help local airmen by providing them with a home away from home during their first enlistment. The nomination submission says that hosts serve as mentor, friend and advisor, providing a "caring environment to relax, away from the pressures of work and future deployments."
The Association is a national nonprofit that serves as a connection point for local, state, military and industry leaders to share knowledge, information and best practices. It includes nearly 300 community, state, regional and industry organizations.
The other Great American Defense Communities are: The Alamo-San Antonio Region, Texas; The Charleston Region in South Carolina; Christian County in Kentucky, The Fort hood-Central Texas region; Maricopa County, Arizona; Sierra Vista, Arizona; and the governments of Southeastern Connecticut.
According to an Association news release, a special reception and congressional breakfast will be held during the Defense communities national Summit in Washington, D.C. next month.
