[ARCHIVED] Bench, marker to honor NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson

Johnson

Aug. 26, 2016 - A bench and marker honoring Dr. Katherine Johnson, a pioneering NASA mathematician and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, will be unveiled Friday at 2 p.m. at Carousel Park in downtown Hampton.

The free event, which also celebrates Johnson's 98th birthday, is open to the public.

A research mathematician at NASA during the beginning of the space race, Johnson broke racial and gender barriers for the precise calculations that projected orbits and trajectories for historic space flights, including the first flight to and from the moon.

"Hidden Figures," a movie about Johnson's life based on a book by Margot Lee Shetterly and starring Taraji P. Henson, is scheduled to be released in January.

The unveiling and dedication is sponsored by the National Technical Association, The Sankofa Projects, and the Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau.
