June 6, 2016 - The Environmental Services Division will begin using truck-mounted, ultra-low voltage spraying for mosquitoes this week. Spraying will begin Monday evening in the Harris Creek and Hall Road/Beach Road areas, and in the Foxbridge area. It will continue in other areas throughout the week, depending on the weather.

Warmer temperatures and higher than average rainfall have created the perfect condition for mosquitoes to breed in some areas of Hampton. Residents where mosquitoes are a problem are encouraged to wear long-sleeve clothing and mosquito repellant, and to dump or remove any standing water that can be a mosquito breeding ground.

A mosquito spray hotline is available at 757-727-8415, and residents can call 311 (727-8311 from a cell phone) to request that an area be sprayed. The truck routes will be identified on the city website at www.hampton.gov/mosquito or by calling the mosquito control hotline.

The spraying targets the Asian Tiger mosquito, which lays its eggs in standing water and is more common in Hampton. Unlike some other mosquitoes, the Asian Tiger is most active during the day and rest at night, making it difficult to control with spraying. That’s why dumping standing water is so important. Most other mosquitoes are susceptible to the evening sprays.
