[ARCHIVED] Council briefed on Hampton Roads crossing alternatives

Dec. 9, 2015 - Hampton City Council was briefed Wednesday morning on some Virginia Department of Transportation options for relieving congestion at crossings in the region, including the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel.

Area residents are being asked to comment on the options as well at a meeting Thursday evening.

One of the options under consideration modifies a plan to widen the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and I-64 in Hampton and Norfolk. An earlier plan to make the roadway 8-10 lanes fell out of favor because it would have required taking significant amounts of property on both sides of the water.

The new widening plan has some variations on lane options but would be confined to the existing right-of-way. VDOT calls that Alternative A, with 6 lanes crossing the water and 6 lanes on I-64 on either side.

Alternative B includes HRBT modifications, plus improvements to I-564 in Norfolk and Route 164 in Portsmouth.

Alternative C would leave the HRBT alone but build a third crossing parallel to the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel that splits off to Craney Island and I-654 to Norfolk Naval Base.

Alternative D is a combination of Alternatives B and C.

The current input process is meant to help prioritize the crossings and does not at this point look at cost or how any improvements would be financed.

Residents can give their opinion on the alternatives at a VDOT meeting Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Captain John Smith Elementary School in Hampton, or online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HRCSSEISComments.
