[ARCHIVED] Announcing the 2015 Yard of the Year Award Winner!

Yard of the Year Gary Holloway

The Hampton Clean City Commission is pleased to announce that Gary Holloway of Southampton Avenue was awarded Yard of the Year by the HCCC Beautification Committee. This award is based on the beauty, sustainability, and uniqueness of the resident's yard.

Mr. Holloway's yard includes a variety of native plants, a vegetable garden, a water feature, a rain barrel, and a welcoming environment for birds. It is beautiful, well kept, and unique.

The Yards Are Really Distinctive Showplaces (YARDS) Contest focuses on curb appeal; proper plant selection, placement, and care; good low-maintenance horticultural practices; resource conservation (including energy, resource, and water conservation); pollution prevention; and unique touches that personalize the landscape. Each month, May through September, up to three winners are selected as Yard of the Month. At the end of the season, one yard that exemplifies these principles the best is selected as Yard of the Year, and the residents are recognized at the annual volunteer recognition event.

In addition to Mr. Holloway, Yard of the Month winners throughout the 2015 gardening season were: Benjamin Artis, Naomi Davis, William Henry, Charles and Celestine Johnson, Martha Keith, Jean Lucy, William Montfort, Nick and Patty Nicholas, Ron and Moni Owens, Janet Tucker and Dorothy Woolard.
