[ARCHIVED] E-Commerce Center endorsed by Planning Commission

A proposal for an internet commerce building at Todds Lane and Aberdeen Road won the backing of the Hampton Planning Commission on Thursday, July 9.
The proposal, which was hailed as innovative, would be a mixed-use facility that would combine office space, storage space and a package mailing center.
Developer Bobby Freeman described the concept as serving both large and small internet sellers, with short-term leases available. Up to half of sellers on Amazon, he noted, are mom-and-pop style businesses. In addition, he said, an e-Bay sales center on site would sell goods for non-experienced sellers.
This would provide an internet seller with "a place to work, a place to store his inventory and a place to ship," said Freeman. In addition, he noted, he plans to work with the city's Economic Development Department to help grow local businesses.
"We think this is a tremendous business incubator property," said Freeman. "We hope to bring them in and help them grow."
The property is a part of Todd Center. The corner lot previously contained a gas station and parking spaces. The proposal will next go to Hampton City Council for a vote.
