[ARCHIVED] 'Stand down' scheduled to help homeless veterans and their families

Nov. 12, 2014 - Hampton’s Military Affairs Committee and the Hampton VA Medical Center will sponsor a “stand down” for homeless veterans, their family members, and veterans at risk of becoming homeless on Saturday from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the YH Thomas Community Center, 1300 Thomas St.

A "stand down” is traditionally defined as ceasing all regular operations in order to focus on a defined need. The goal of Saturdays stand down is to provide a full range of services and assistance to homeless veterans and their family members at one convenient location. Food, clothing, showers, health screenings, and referrals to other necessary services will be available.

The “stand down” is a key component of a goal set by the Department of Veterans Affairs to end homelessness among veterans by the end of 2015.
