The Grave Injustice: The Middle Passage and the Afterlife of Slavery - Virtual Event

Monday, June 7, 2021

In this Facebook Live event, Chadra Pittman, Founder and Executive Director of The Sankofa Projects, will explore the history of the “Middle Passage,” resurrecting memory, honoring of Ancestors, and giving voice to the untold history of Africans of the Diaspora. From her work at the New York African Burial Ground Project to the creation of Sankofa’s Annual Remembrance Day at Buckroe Beach, she has worked to honor the lives lost during the Middle Passage. This presentation will deal with the act of remembrance for people of African descent that have been trying desperately to carve our “spaces to breathe” since they first touched shore. This lecture provides deeper understanding of the Remembrance event, first established 2012, and taking place virtually on June 12; and takes you on a journey beginning with Africans forcibly brought across the Atlantic to contemporary issues shaped by this tragic past. After the talk airs on Facebook, it can be found on www.hamptonhistorymuseum.o
