Facebook Live chat on budget priorities

Monday, March 22, 2021

City Manager Mary Bunting wants to hear from you about priorities in the city's budget. Bunting has asked for input in advance of developing her recommended budget each year – a unique planning feature – for the past 11 years. Join the conversation by asking a question, or just sit back and watch by visiting the link on the city's Facebook page. Questions and comments are welcome!

This year, meetings will be held as questions and answers and general discussions over Facebook Live on Hampton's page. Three sessions will be held:

Thursday, March 18, at 7 p.m.
Monday, March 22, at noon
Thursday, March 25, at 7 p.m.
Chats will be rebroadcast on Hampton TV  (Cox 47; Verizon Fios 22).

Residents and business owners can comment or ask questions on any budget-related topic, but the themes are expected to include:
  • Property assessments
  • Tax rates
  • High-priority projects
  • Special funds or fees
  • What you want to see funded for the city
There will not be online polling this year. Many of the projects residents requested last year were listed in the operating budget, but were put on hold due to revenue losses caused by Covid-19. Those projects  include: Measures to both fight and prevent crime; activities and programs for young people; expanded workforce development and training; creating an Office of Economic Empowerment & Family Resiliency; and consolidated enforcement of codes.

Priorities for large capital projects were enhanced school building maintenance; expanded street repaving; new fire station for Phoebus; increased stormwater maintenance; conversion to LED streetlights; bus stop improvements; and Resilient Hampton projects to reduce flooding.
