CANCELED: Phoebus Dock Party and Sock Burning

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Due to coronavirus concerns, this event has been canceled but may be rescheduled. The spring solstice has arrived and Phoebus is celebrating. The official sock burning presentation is at 2:30 p.m. Please bring a pair of socks to donate to the Salvation Army. The party includes live music, beer, seafood, treats and children’s activities. What is a sock burning? Annual sock burning began in spring 1978, when after a snowy winter, boatbuilder Bob Turner bid his oppressive sock-wearing days farewell for the summer by throwing them into a campfire. What was an act of defiance turned into tradition. At the beginning of spring, boaters across the country toss socks into a fire and put on boat shoes & flip flops to celebrate the return of boating season.

Sock Burning Etiquette?
  1. Please make sure that your feet are ready for their post-sock debut.
  2. This is a sock burning event only. Don’t bring other items to burn.
  3. Important rule — make sure the socks you burn are old wool or cotton. Fleece is a no-no.
  4. Once socks are removed, please make sure that you have shoes that are non-sock friendly to wear for safety and the courtesy of others.
  5. Move carefully and cautiously towards the fire. Place your socks in, take the obligatory photo and move on.
  6. Final thought, think of others and bring a new pair of socks to donate. The Salvation Army will be collecting socks throughout the event.
