This 31st annual juried exhibition presents the many forms of glass created by members of the Virginia Glass Guild, a membership organization of glass artists working all across the state of Virginia. This exhibition offers a wide range of creative glass processes, including blown, carved, cast, painted, flame-worked, fused, leaded, neon, sandblasted, and stained glass. The show runs Oct. 13-Dec. 2.
Related events will include the juror’s lecture and a silent auction. In their juror’s statement from a past year’s exhibition Douglas and Katya Heller wrote, “The exhibition is a microcosm of the ongoing evolution occurring as glass continues to be embraced as a material of creative expression by an ever-widening circle of artists and makers.”
An internationally known figure in the world of glass, Hank Murta Adams will select and present an estimated $4,000 in cash awards and scholarships. Adams is one of the most imaginative, experimental, and collectible glass artists working today. He developed a style that mixes humor with undertones of madness or cynicism, subversion or sadness. As one reviewer put it, his works are "heroic in scale, but anti-heroic in character."

"Going through family struggles that have dealt with loss and loneliness; I‘ve endeavored to make life a wonderful and unforgettable adventure and I’ve asked glass to live the same. This work has been an ongoing installation of constant reflection upon my life and my ability to find the balance. Along this journey, my life being in a constant state of motion has had little stability like that of this molten material.
Glass lives a life in flux between fluidity and form. My work explores these dichotomies and pushes to put glass at the brink of make or break moments. I make installations that confront this balance between order and chaos and attempt to give structure to this un-structurable material. My process is experimental, the outcome not always known and is fraught struggle between opposing sides."
