A note about salary increases

I rarely write emails in response to Daily Press articles, but today I felt compelled to do so because the newspaper incorrectly said I received raises that other city staff didn't get. This is simply not the case, and we have asked the Daily Press to correct its misinformation. 

Here is the correct information:

  • All of us earned more in FY12, compared with FY11, because it was a year that contained an extra pay period. It didn't change anyone's salary or pay rate and was simply the way the calendar fell.
  •  All of us got a 6% increase in FY13, though it didn't result in an appreciable increase in take-home pay for any of us. When the Council dealt with the mandated VRS conversion in FY 2013 by giving all employees a 6% raise to offset the requirement that employees start paying the employee share, they did the same (no more, no less) for me. 
  • When city employees had no salary increase, I had no salary increase - nor did I ask for one.  
  • This year, when we were able to offer true raises, I took steps to ensure that people making less than $50,000 got a bigger percentage increase than those making higher salaries by proposing the bonus-equivalent dollar amount for merit rather than strictly a percentage increase.

I wish the Daily Press has simply contacted us to understand the information they had, but if they had, the story would not have been as provocative. I hope they make the requested correction so their readers will know the truth. However, I felt it important that each of you know the facts.
