City Manager's Message Nov. 13: Holiday time off, COVID-19 reminder

Posted on November 13, 2020 at 12:16 PM by Don Mann

I don’t know about you all, but I am having a hard time believing that Thanksgiving is right around the corner! While the pandemic has upended all of our lives, it doesn’t seem to have slowed time at all.

As we enter the holiday season, I want to announce that city employees will once again have the day after Thanksgiving and all day on Christmas Eve off as administrative bonus days resulting from the strong performance in the biennial citizen satisfaction survey. While the survey results technically earned employees a half day off on Christmas Eve, the Council has concurred with my recommendation that we give the whole day off as an extra measure of appreciation for all you have and continue to do for our residents during these challenging times. We do realize that many of our public safety and public works employees will have to work — and we truly thank you for your sacrifice of time with your family to protect and serve our community — so we will provide an equivalent time off allowance at a later time this fiscal year.

I hope you all have a wonderful, and safe, holiday season. As you plan for the holidays, please remember to continue to exercise prudent COVID-19 best practices. You can find the CDC’s recommendations here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays.html. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Virginia Health Department (VDH) are very concerned about the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases nationwide. While Virginia’s caseloads have been lower than other states, we are not immune from more rapid community spread, especially as people travel across the country to visit loved ones for the holidays. Thus, we must increase our diligence both in our professional and personal lives.

As a reminder, you are expected to conduct a personal COVID-19 screen at home before reporting to work and to take a temperature screen as you enter the work place each day. If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, please confer with your immediate supervisor and/or department head about your need to stay away from the workplace. Our internal COVID-19 tracing team remains in place, and we will continue to notify potentially impacted employees of exposures as we become aware of new cases. We have had a relatively low number of cases, which is a great tribute to all of you. Please help us to continue to keep our workforce — and by extension your families — safe!
