CM Message 9-25-17: Customer Service Week

Posted on September 25, 2017 at 2:18 PM by Fred Gaskins

There are many things that make Hampton a special city, and one of those is the excellent customer service that you all provide to our citizens. I believe those day-to-day interactions shape people's view of our city. As you know from the results of our biennial surveys, residents have very high satisfaction with our staff and how they do their jobs.

Nevertheless, it’s helpful to take the national Customer Service Week to re-focus and re-dedicate ourselves to continuing excellence in serving our customers while also celebrating the great job our Hampton team does.

For Customer Service Week 2017, which begins Oct. 2, Human Resources will offer a Lunch and Learn workshop (Monday 2-3 p.m.) related to this topic. The Conventions and Visitors Bureau will offer a city tour designed to better acquaint some of our staff with the rich history and attractions that Hampton offers. That will take place Tuesday morning.  Then take a cruise on Wednesday afternoon with the Miss Hampton II, at the Hampton Maritime Center.  And, on Thursday, join the Citizens’ Unity Commission as they present “The Power of Inclusion” for lunch at the Hampton History Museum.

There are limited seats for these events, and you need to get your supervisor’s approval to register. More information will be forthcoming.

I would also like to personally invite you to an Employee Appreciation Lunch. We haven’t been able to do this annually, but we have a unique opportunity again this year. It will be held Friday, Oct 27, from noon to 2 p.m. at Bluebird Gap Farm. Because Parks will be setting up for a big weekend fall festival, we are able to extend the event and offer employees lunch and a sampling of some of the fun activities that will be a part of the weekend festival. It’s not technically during Customer Service Week, but please think of this as a way I and my staff can thank you for the excellent work you do every day for our customers.

As you know, I really think of our staff as a second family. What better way to celebrate that than with a fun event to bring us together? I know some work schedules will keep everyone from attending, but I hope to see as many of you as possible. Consider this a “save the date,” and watch your email and hampton.gov/employees or contact 311 at 757-727-8311 for more details.

Thanks for all you do,

Mary
