City Manager's Message 1-9-17: Winter Weather Update/Delayed Opening for 1-10-17

Posted on January 9, 2017 at 5:39 PM by Mary Bunting

Good evening,

I hope everyone is staying safe and warm in these very unusual conditions. Our Public Works crews have made more progress today, but had to make up from very cold temperatures last night that left very icy roads. Our main roads are looking much better, but neighborhood streets remain covered in snow and ice. In addition to extremely low temperatures, today was somewhat overcast meaning the sun did not assist in the melting of these side roads. Tonight's temperatures are again going to be very low. The good news is warmer temperatureses are projected for tomorrow, beginning in the mid-morning. We believe the higher temperatures will significantly improve the neighborhood streets.

In the abundance of caution, and in the interest of our employees' and residents' safety, we will delay opening of city facilities until 10 am on Tuesday. Additionally, we will offer liberal leave for those of you who prefer to stay home for safety or childcare reasons since school will be closed all day. If you do choose to take advantage of the liberal leave, please remember to coordinate your intentions with your immediate supervisor and/or department head. Whatever you choose to do, please remember to exercise great caution on all roads whenever you venture out.

All updates, including this one, will be posted to the website and made available to 311 for those employees who do not have access to city email.

In closing, I want to again applaud the effort of our full Public Works and Public Safety team. As the majority of the workforce has rested inside warm homes, each of you has worked tirelessly to make our city safer. You are truly unsung heroes for whom we are all grateful!
