This morning, when I woke up and went through my usual ritual of checking Facebook, I had the following Facebook memory in my feed. This is what Hampton City Hall looked like exactly two years ago today, and what it will apparently look like this evening. A good bit of irony to start off this long weekend...

As you have likely heard, our area is now expecting snow beginning this afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, the highest snow amounts will be across coastal northeast North Carolina where amounts will range from 2-3" inches with isolated amounts up to 4" along the Albemarle Sound. Snow amounts of 1-2" are expected across Hampton Roads and the lower VA Eastern Shore. Snow will begin to overspread the region between Noon and 2 pm, lasting into this evening. Treacherous travel is expected during the evening rush. High temperatures today will struggle to reach to low to mid 30s. Lows tonight will be in the 20s.

Because we expect there to be very dangerous conditions this afternoon and evening, I am authorizing liberal leave use beginning at noon. Please remember that liberal leave must be coordinated with your supervisor and/or department head in accordance with your departmental policies.

Finally, I want to take a moment to wish everyone a wonderful Valentines' Day. As I noted last year, so often, as we move into adulthood, Valentines' Day becomes only about our romantic interests and loves. We miss the opportunity to show our other kinds of love for those - like friends, co-workers and neighbors - that make a positive difference in our lives. I am constantly reminded by my children that Valentines’ Day is so much more - it is an opportunity to show our affection and appreciation for others. Our children remind us that this is a natural and appropriate thing for us to do. I hope you will each take a few minutes today to wish your co-workers a very special Valentine's Day, and when you do maybe take a few extra minutes to tell them how they enrich your life. Words of appreciation and thanks truly make the best Valentine's presents!

Thank you for the dedication and love you give to our great city each and very day! Please be safe and warm on this long weekend.

Mary
