Holiday door decorating contest

Posted on December 3, 2014 at 5:08 PM by Mary Bunting

The holiday season is here and with it comes a Holiday Door Decorating Contest. Thanks to the Employee Council, and several employees who suggested the idea when we had the pumpkin decorating contest, we are holding a contest with prizes!

Department and division offices are invited to “deck the halls” with the holiday spirit and make the season a little more special and fun. The fun is not limited to City Hall offices. Our judges will visit fire stations, community centers and all operation locations.

Here are the rules that must be followed so our event is safe as well as fun:

  • Departments are encouraged to break into divisions and smaller groups. For example, instead of one door for all of the Community Development Department, individual divisions might do their own door. Similarly, rather than just one Public Works door, there might be one for each division.
  • To be eligible to win a prize, a photo of your department or division office’s decorated door must be submitted to Marketing by close of business on Thursday, December 18.
  • Decorations may not obstruct or prevent easy access to the office and door handles must remain visible and operational.
  • Do not use materials that will damage doors or office walls.
  • No nails, tacks, or staples may be put into the doors and all adhesives used must be fully removable.
  • Live plants and greenery is NOT permissible.
  • Do not use electrical cords that can become caught in door jambs.
  • All decorations must be removed from doors by close of business on Wednesday, December 31

Any decorations containing materials deemed offensive by Administration or found not in compliance of the rules listed above will be immediately disqualified and the office will be asked to remove the decorations. These will not be judged.

Decorated doors will be evaluated on three criteria: visual impact, creativity, and craftsmanship. The winner will be announced on Friday, Dec. 19, and awarded with a Pizza Party for the office.

Participants shall register for the contest by the close of business on Thursday, December 18. To register, e-mail Marketing at marketinginc@hampton.gov with a clear, color picture of your decorated door. Be sure to include your building, floor number, and participating staff.
