Manager's Message 8-26-14: Compensation & Classification Study

Posted on August 26, 2014 at 11:21 AM by Mary Bunting

Over the past several months, I have shared that we are conducting a comprehensive employee compensation review. This review is being conducted by Management Advisory Group, MAG, an external expert on compensation and pay structures.

I am very excited about this study and Council's willingness to fund it as it has been over twenty years since we have done a study of this type. While Human Resources has monitored external pay comparisons over those years, this will be a comprehensive study that will look at all job descriptions, internal comparisons of jobs and external pay comparability.

MAG will provide recommendationscity manager to us in time for next year's budget development. We will use this study to gauge the investments we need to make in both our pay structures and overall pay approach.

We have now moved into the phase of the study where MAG is seeking each employee's input on their job duties and activities. Nicole Clark, our Human Resources Director, wrote to you about this last week. However, this effort is so important that I felt it best for me to re-iterate the information she shared and to amplify on why it is critical that you participate.

All employees are asked to participate in this survey either individually or in groups of like employees. Your department head and/or immediate supervisors will be providing time for you to complete this survey during regularly scheduled work hours. I urge you to participate as it is important for MAG to have direct knowledge of the daily duties of your particular job. This will allow them to review current job descriptions for accuracy and to ensure that they are appropriately slotted in our pay structures. This is the base data that will also be used to look at external and internal pay comparisons.

Our goal is to have 100% employee participation. The surveys should be completed by September 12th. Again, your department head and/or immediate supervisor will make sure you have time to complete this work.

MAG has been sponsoring employee information sessions and there will be additional ones on:

The highlighted sessions have limited seating and are available to department personnel only.  Pre-registration is not required, however you are encouraged to make arrangements with your supervisor to minimize the disruption of City services.

Please share this information with employees who do not have access to email. Realizing that not every employee will be able to attend a session,  Human Resources and MAG will also be putting together a video for those of you who are not able to attend one of these sessions.

Thank you for being a partner in this study. As we progress throughout the study, Ms. Clark and I will provide additional updates to you as we are able.

Mary
