The Virginia School Engagement Project

When the Hampton Economic Development Authority sold much of its portion of the former site of the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, the City kept about 10 of the former school property. Hampton also set aside $1.5 million of the proceeds from the land sale to support two primary objectives:View map in larger window Opens in new window

  • How to honor the legacy of the former Virginia School
  • To invest in public assets or infrastructure for the surrounding neighborhood

Hampton will engage the community in the first half of 2024 to get input on preferred ways to accomplish both goals.

Upcoming Outreach Process

November 2023 through Spring/Summer of 2024

  • Phase 1: Preparing to Engage – Compiling contacts of community members, preparing research, defining the outreach plan, and preparing for future events
  • Phase 2: Listening for Understanding – Gathering community input on the future use of the 10 acres and the means to honor the legacy of the “Virginia School”
  • Phase 3: Refining Community Ideas – Sharing what has been heard from the public and working with the community to refine the ideas into actionable solutions
  • Phase 4: Provide Recommendations – A summary of community insights along with final recommendations are presented to the City Council for their approval
  • Phase 5: Act on the Solutions – Final design work and construction is undertaken on approved recommendations from the community
