In October 2016, Hampton Economic Development began a Workforce Development initiative to study the issues of economic mobility in Hampton. As a facilitator, our department was able to bring workforce, economic development, educational and industry partners to the same table, all in the name of advancing an integrated and highly skilled workforce.
A group of 25 organizations spanning a range of disciplines and backgrounds — grassroots, government, education, neighborhood, business, faith and nonprofit — began a journey known as Progressing through Partnership, which became Working as One under the Workforce Hampton Initiative.
The goals of the Workforce Hampton initiative are to:
Close the gap in accessibility to workforce resources and services that prepare individuals for employment to provide family sustaining wages.
Create stronger partnerships, policies that will strengthen the workforce as a whole, and opportunities that lead individuals to a career pathway.
ACT Work Ready Communities
The first major initiative under Workforce Hampton was the announcement of the city becoming an ACT Work Ready Community. This initiative’s value is the development and quantifying work-ready skills in Hampton. The information gathered through the program can be used by community leaders to help build career pathways that will help both businesses and individuals thrive.
The WorkOne Center at Y.H. Thomas
The purpose of the WorkOne Center aligns with the goals of the overall Workforce Hampton initiative: close the gap in accessibility to workforce resources and services and create stronger partnerships and effective policies for career-building.
