Dr. Karenne Wood, a member of the Monacan Indian Nation and an anthropologist, examines the deep history of American Indian presence in what we now call Virginia and considers how our understanding of that history has changed with archaeological discoveries. She also analyzes the ways in which that story has been presented and how Native people have come to be seen as people of the past through the interpretations of museums and historians, policy makers, and popular media. She considers these issues from a Native perspective and offers ideas intended to expand the story we tell about Virginia’s first people. This lecture is in celebration of National Native American Heritage Month 2017.

Mariners’ Museum archivist Bill Barker presents “Answering America’s Call: Newport News in World War I” as part of the Hampton History Museum’s free “Lunch in Time” series on Wednesday, Nov. 15. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917. American materiel contributions proved to be decisive in terminating the conflict. Far from the battlefields of Europe, Newport News was transformed into the second largest military Port of Embarkation and played a crucial role in the transport of an extraordinary number of weapons, supplies, and people across the ocean. As part of his illustrated lecture, Barker will share the stories of individuals who served locally, passed through the port, or lived on the Peninsula as they answered America’s call to arms in the First World War.
