Jose could bring minor coastal flooding to Hampton; advisory issued

Sept. 18, 2017 - The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for Hampton and all of Hampton Roads until 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Hurricane Jose is expected to remain well off the East Coast, but still will likely bring light rain through Tuesday. Winds will also pick up, with sustained winds as high as 20-25 mph and gusts that could approach 30-35mph, with immediate coastal areas experiencing the higher winds.

The coastal flood advisory means that winds plus wave action or tides are expected to create flooding in low-lying areas near the shore, as well as tidal rivers and creeks.

High tides in Hampton should occur around 9 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Minor flooding is predicted near those high tides.

Residents are reminded not to drive through roads covered with water.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Maria strengthened to a Category 5, threatening many of the same islands devastated by Irma. The city will be monitoring the path of Maria, and residents should also be vigilant.
