Hampton sheriff's office warns residents about arrest warrant scam and phony calls

May 25, 2017 - The Hampton Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a phone scam targeting area residents.  Lt. Alonzo Cherry said several residents have received calls this week from people falsely identifying themselves as Sheriff’s employees. The caller threatens people with arrests because of a missed jury service date, but says they can avoid arrest by making immediate payments of$250 and $500 through Green Dot cards, money orders and cash. Cherry said the call is a scam and the legitimate "collection of fines will be requested through a summons served by your local sheriff’s office." Call Hampton Police at 757-727-6111 (option 4) to file a report about a scam call. For more information contact Cherry at 728-2010.
