March 21, 2017 - The public comment period is now open for citizens to consider the final draft of a state report on water quality standards in the Back River. The report examines the maximum daily amount of pollutants allowed in the river before federal standards are exceeded. The state is required to develop this "total maximum daily load," or TMDL, for each pollutant that might cause an impairment in the water.
The draft report (file may take time to download) is available online. Comments should be submitted to Rachel Hamm, Rachel.Hamm@deq.virginia.gov, or Rachel Hamm, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Tidewater Regional Office, 5636 Southern Boulevard, Virginia Beach, Va., 23462. The comment period ends April 17.
