Reading & Early Literacy
Early literacy plays an important role in ensuring all children are entering school ready to learn and ready to succeed. Promoting early literacy improves the social and emotional development of young children and increases the likelihood that children grow up in an environment where books are available and literacy is valued.
New, age-appropriate books are provided to children through:
- Welcome Baby – board books are given to new parents
- Healthy Start – participating children are provided birthday books each year
- Mayor’s Book Club – Hampton City School preschool children are given a copy of the “book of the month”each month during the school year
- Summer Reading – Hampton City School preK, Kindergarten and First graders are given a book to read over the summer
The children’s book programs are in need of new children’s books appropriate for preschoolers, kindergarteners or first graders to support Welcome Baby, Healthy Start, the Mayors Book Club and the summer reading program.
